Sledding & Ice Skating
There is something about the first real snow that brings out the child in all of us. NW Indiana has some wonderful places to embrace winter fun.
Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton: Once the snow blankets the landscape, the dunes become one of the most magical sledding spots around. The rolling hills offer gentle slopes for younger kids and more adventurous options for older kids and adults. On a bright, sunny winter day, the views of the lake and dunes feel like something straight from a winter postcard.
Mount Baldy: If you prefer a fast, thrilling ride, Mount Baldy is the place to go. Located just east of the dunes and known for its steep, sandy slopes in summer, it transforms into a favorite sledding destination when snow conditions are right. Weather can change quickly this time of year, so taking a moment to check conditions will help you plan the perfect outing.
Bulldog Park Ice Rink – Downtown Crown Point: A local favorite for winter fun, Bulldog Park offers a beautiful outdoor ice rink surrounded by festive décor, seasonal music, and that small-town holiday energy that Crown Point does so well. Whether you are skating hand-in-hand or watching little ones take their first glide, it is a memorable winter outing.
Central Park Plaza Ice Rink – Downtown Valparaiso: This covered outdoor rink in the heart of Valpo is perfect for families, couples, or anyone who loves a classic winter activity. Grab a hot chocolate from a nearby coffee shop after skating, stroll through the decorated downtown area, and take in the holiday lights.
Skate the Plaza at Deep River Waterpark: When the waterpark closes for the season, the plaza transforms into one of the largest outdoor ice rinks in the region. With music, lights, and rentals available, it is a fantastic option for groups or families who want plenty of space to skate.
